Your dental and general health relationship has been well-documented for many years. Recent research has shown a link between your dental health and your chance of acquiring dementia, namely Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent form of the condition. Our dentists in Greeley Dental Care in Greeley,CO will take care of your friend with your gum related diseases.
How Oral Bacteria Contributes to Alzheimer’s Disease
An investigation by the National Institutes of Health (NIA) revealed that the bacteria that causes gum disease is linked to the development of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Memory loss may occur in a variety of ways, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for 60–70 percent of all occurrences of memory loss.
Gum disease develops when plaque accumulates on the teeth and hardens into tartar, allowing bacteria to colonize the spaces between your teeth and gums and cause them to bleed. If gum disease is treated early on, it may be prevented from having serious health repercussions.
If neglected, a patient becomes exposed to more significant health conditions such as gum recession or tooth loss, which may cause germs to move through the bloodstream and into their brains, mimicking exactly the symptoms of dementia.
What is the impact of Alzheimer’s disease on dental health?
Oral health may become more difficult to maintain throughout the middle and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The individual may forget how to use toothpaste or how to rinse or that they would be reluctant to outside aid. If you have oral discomfort or your dentures are not fitting properly, you may lose appetite.
There is an important link between dental health and dementia
The mouth is home to around 700 different types of bacteria, some of which are known to cause periodontal (gum) disease. As part of a new NIA-led investigation, researchers have connected the bacteria that cause gum disease to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, notably vascular Alzheimer’s disease, over time.
Taking Care of the Oral Health of an Alzheimer’s Patient
The dental health of patients with Alzheimer’s disease often deteriorates as the illness increases in severity.Patients identified in the early stages of the disease are usually able to keep their regular routines, such as brushing their teeth and going to our Greeley dentist.
As their disease worsens and their cognitive ability diminishes, Alzheimer’s patients lose track of the routines they may have followed for most of their lives. This may harm their dental health as well as their general well-being.
When it comes to caring for a patient with Alzheimer’s disease, prevention is essential. If you or someone you care about has dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, the following information from the Alzheimer’s Association may be of assistance:
